Oh, man, I fuckin' love this already.
I was starting to think I had a solid idea of what an Ancillary was, and what segments were. I was going off of the reactions of the folks in the icy setting of the first chapter to the narrator, assuming that Ancillaries were, like...androids, or something. Humanoid, maybe human-looking enough to hit the uncanny valley?
But, okay, they're human bodies that've been not-quite-killed and wired up to the AIs of ships like Justice of Toren. Okay! Great! Like, I unironically think this is awesome, even if it's horrifying.
I really liked the Head-Priest's frank discussion with One Esk of why she'd rather have Justice of Toren's ghastly troupe of Ancillary bodies occupying Ors than Justice of Ente's human troops.
Like, she trusts these enslaved almost-corpses more than she trusts human soldiers, because at least the former have no choice but to take part in this brutal, frequently corrupt military regime of "annexations," whereas the humans are making a choice to be involved, and frequently going above and beyond the call of duty in terms of how twisted they can be in their treatment of the populace.
Also: One Esk sings and collects songs because one of their thousands-of-years-dead officers liked to play music! I! Love! This character! What the heck happened to leave them stuck in one human body? Shit, I have to go pick up my lunch and I don't wanna, I'd rather keep reading.

"One Esk will shoot me if you order it. WIthout hesitation. But One Esk would never beat me or humiliate me, or rape me, for no purpose but to show its power over me, or to satisfy some sick amusement." She looked at me. "Would you?"
"No, Divine," I said.
"The soldiers of Justice of Ente Issa did all of those things."
